Frosty, freezing, fast

Well its christmas time. and i have been listening to christmas music on the radio while driving places the past few weeks. i read a blog titled "To Every Man a Manswer" written by Dr. Awesome. men write in with questions about manliness to Dr. Awesome and he answers them. someone recently asked him what the manliest christmas carol is. here is his respose you should read it. you'll like it. even if you aren't a man.

Last week i was in my first blizzard in a while. i miss them. i can say for sure that i wasn't in any blizzards last year. i know because everytime it snowed last year i was out shoveling it (sometimes as it was still coming down) and i didn't even own a jacket. if you can survive outside without a jacket then there is no way its a blizzard. I'm hoping for some more blizzards this year. they are fun. can't beat blizzarding

my roommates got rock band 2 this week. i am no where near the greatest at it. i just switched from hard from medium the other day. (which is a much bigger diffuculty jump than eay to medium) but sometimes the strangest thing happens when we get the the toughest part of the song, the part where everyone is in a perrty good frenzy because of how quickly the notes are coming at them. well a few times in this spot i have had to focus so much on the strumming, keeping the tempo super quick, takes the rests right, counting how many notes are wizzing past, etc that i have completely forgot about hitting the buttons with my left hand. but somehow my left had would keep pushing the right buttons at the right time.
not sure how it did it. i swear someone else must have been controlling.
maybe i am just better at rock band subconsciously than i am consciously?

e-vites, endings, and every stinkin year

a while ago was the two hour special 24 event. kind of a build up to the season. a story that happens between seasons 6 and 7. i made a facebook event about it and invited some people. it wasn't really a party, just watching tv. i invited all the guys in my house (they are always invited to watch tv with me) and a few other people that had watched 24 with us in the past. nothing serious just a "hey wanna watch 24?" kinda thing. well on facebook the event had 5 confirmed guests. me, three of my roommates, and some guy named "Lucho Espitia Useche"
he is not my friend,
in real life or facebook.
he is from columbia.
he isn't even friends with any of my friends.
from what i could tell all his friends are from columbia too.
number of friends i have in columbia: 0*
i was kind of hoping he would show up for the party but he didn't. it would have made a better story i think if he did. maybe next time i have a 24 party i will invite him. see what happens.

i drove home from my parents house on thanksgiving night, i had to work the next morning. it was that night that i realized that going to bed is one of the best things to do when you finish driving. its so nice. park the car. grab your stuff. lay down and go to bed. it ties with playing ultimate frisbee for my favorite thing to do at the end of a drive. twice this summer i came back to the cities (once from north dakota, once from south daktoa) and within 30 seconds of parking my car was playing ultimate.
not quite sure what this means. does that mean sleeping and ultimate are really similar? cause that doesn't make sense... or does it?

... nah, it doesn't

what is it with people this time of year. its like the 3 months we have without snow people completely forget what it is and how to drive on it. there are two types. type 1 must not even realize that there is such a thing as snow and keeps driving half a billion miles an hour even though you can see him sliding and slipping all over the place. type 2 sees the snow and realizes it is slippery and apparently believes there is nothing in the world more dangerous  than going over one mile per hour on the snow. the other day i was on lexington (45 mph zone) pulled up behind someone at a stoplight. when it turned green the person in front of me started going (barely) and so i let my foot off the brake. i saw they were giong slow so i didn't put my foot on the gas. just let my car go the 5 mph or what ever it goes all on its own. but no... thats too fast. had to use the break again.... really. really... you have to go that slow... ugh
this time of year it seems everyone else on the road is a horrible driver. but come spring time once we have been driving on snow for about 10 months they won't be.
ok yeah most of them will still be horrible drivers. just better at snow.

*i have nothing against people in/from columbia. i just don't have any friends from there. if you are from there and want to be my friend thats fine with me.

decaf, decluttering, duty

when i am sitting at the coffee shop i wonder what would happen if i gave people who wanted decaf  regular coffee and people that wanted regular decaf. sometimes i am really tempted to do it. i picture the person who wanted regular falling asleep at work wondering "how can i be this tired? i've had so much coffee" and i picture the person who normally has decaf but gets regular buzzing on a caffeine high. i picture it being something like the time i gave hannah a vault.

then i remember that decaf actually can have up to 40% of the caffeine that normal coffee has. that makes the switch seem like less fun.

earlier this year when i was helping my parents move i got two big rubbermaid tubs of my clothes that were at home. i figured there was no reason for me to move them from the parents old house to the new house. i might as well take them. after i got them i didn't have to do laundry for so long because i had so many clean clothes. then i just had a whole bunch of laundry to do at once later... oops.
this week i finally went through the rest of the clothes that were still in the rubbermaids. and a bunch of my other clothes and gave a bunch to goodwill, ones that didn't fit or things that i had multiples of.
i am wondering how many t-shirts i need. i don't want to get rid of to many. t-shirts are memories, old camp shirts, shirts from high school, youth group shirts, etc. but at the same time i think it would be fun to do this
someone did a huge survey of what color you associate with each day of the week and made a shirt of that color for that day.
would i need more than a shirt a day?

last tuesday call of duty 5:world at war came out. i think it is the first game i have ever bought on the day it came out. when i was buying it on tuesday i saw a poster at the store saying there was a tournament on friday night. i entered not really thinking i would do that well but that it would be fun to try. friday night came and it was actually kind of intense. every round i started out behind and coming back to take the lead. the story doesn't sound as intense even telling it in person so i won't even try to relate how fast it made my heart race towards the end but i ended up winning the store tournament. i won a shirt (i actually got three shirts) and i advance to the next round. if i win the next round, and the next round then round 4 is in san diego onboard the USS Midway and the winner gets $2500. i don't really think that would be me but it sure would be sweet if it were.
thomas banley- you should get COD5 so we can play online. so should anyone else with a 360

car rides, cooperstown, and congratulations.

858.4 miles... thats kind of a bit
15 hours 45 minutes in a car... also a bit.
2 whole audio books and some adventures and odyssey and a bunch of just radio... well that was just needed to cope with all that time in the car.

i left friday after work and headed to north dakota. apparently 3 o'clock is rush hour. in the first hour i had gotten a whole 20 miles. i borrowed a power inverter so i could power my laptop in the car once the battery ran out so i could keep listening to my audio books. but apparently it doesn't work for computers... just little things i guess. so there was some radio listening.

camp was good. nice to see everyone. good to be back. since i wasn't work i showed up late for breakfast on saturday... just cause i could.

another drive. this time to south dakota. austen's wedding at 5. rolled into town at 4:45. went to walmart to buy a card, stopped at perkins to change in the bathroom. when i walked in carrying a dress shirt and pants the hostess had a confused look on her face. i gave her a "i'm fine" wave and walked into the bathroom. when i walked out i saw the "ooh i get it now" look spread across her face. got to the wedding right on time.

wedding was good. congratulations austen and randi fagerland.
reception was good. i saw people i haven't seen in years. its odd. you don't realize how long you haven't seen people for until you see them again at the end of that long time.

spent the night at levis. went to church then lunch with the darlings. then another drive. back to minnesota this time. this drive was not interstate like the other two. not as quick, but more interesting. and amazing and unbeleivable as it seems i finished my last audiobook right when i pulled in the driveway. amazing.

blockbuster, bosses, and beginning

I got the blockbuster two week free trial of their netflix kinda thing. its pretty good. too bad its only for two weeks. there was something that messed up with my queue but its mainly good. i really like being able to bring back the movies to the store, then getting a free store rental.especially with them being open to midnight. you can watch a movie at night. and return it that night, getting another movie for the next day and then since you returned one one will be mailed out the next day (instead of having to wait for your movie to get there by mail and then they send you one.) pretty good overall. if you are looking for something like that i would recommend it. (at least if you live by a blockbuster)

well the owner of the coffee shop is looking at more people to hire. he wants my opinion on them. its kind of funny. i suppose he should want my opinion... i am an expert... but sometimes i think he is trying just to make sure i think he is cool and not too tough. it can kind of get old.
"what time should i come in tomorrow?"
"i don't know, what time to you want to come in?"
"you're the boss"
sometimes you just have to take charge if you are the one in charge. you know what i am saying?

well.. i am started something that none of you will guess. go ahead try guess what i started this week. i'll give you a hint, think of what i wouldn't do and guess that.... ok everyone got their guess... not yet... ok a little more time to think... 3...2...1... ok well. i started running. yeah didn't guess that did you. and if you did its cause of the hint of something you would never guess. i found some plan where the first week i run 2 minutes walk 4 and go for a half hour. then each week the running gets longer and the walking gets shorter and then before the end of the summer i will run for a half hour straight. that doesn't sound fun... but this year in ultimate frisbee i have become more of a runner than i have ever been. so if there were a time for starting running. now is it. so far its tough, but i haven't died yet. we'll see how it goes.

age, autos, and advertisements

the new owner of the coffee shop is a pretty good guy. he is 30. but i have decided he is old. my determining factor is that he didn't know what ultimate frisbee is. anyone who doesn't know what ultimate is is either very young or old. he isn't young so... he does have xbox live though. we had said a few things about videogames before, today he asked for my gamertag. it felt odd giving my gamertag to a boss but its alright.

its weird knowing more about your job than you boss does. he is getting better though. learning as he goes. sometimes things are in different places or something than what is normal, unless he tells me that is how it is going to be now i just assume he put something in the wrong spot or whatever and move it back to the normal. the sandwich ingredients are never in the right spot. i move them around everyday. i am don't want to say anything. hopefully he picks it up soon.

i have a car for the first time in the cities. its a 2000 dodge intrepid. by far the nicest car i have ever had. its got autostart, air conditioning... all that good stuff. its the newest car i have ever had too. the first car i have owned in the same decade it was made even. all that and it was the cheepest car i have ever had as well. got it for 400 dollars. one of my roommates got a car for 500 the same week. we are the kings of cheep cars.

we have new coffee sleeves at the coffee shop. the have an ad for some car on them. one side shows a picutre of the car and the other side says "you hair looks really good today, like, really really good." or "i don't know what you are doing, but keep doing it" (i think there are more but those are the two i have seen so far) then under that it says complements of the new whatever car... if i agree with the sleeve and think thier hair looks good. i will put that side under the sippy part. so they see it everytime they drink. if i don't think they should "keep doing what they are doing" then that side will be on the back, so they get an ad in thier face every sip.... suckers

weddings, eighth grade, smooth trains, and text messages

well i finally know what i am doing this summer. i am sad to say its not camp. i am staying here in the cities working. this is my first summer since before eighth grade that i haven't worked at camp. weird. i hardly know what summer means without camp. i should be able to make it up there for at least a week, maybe two.
i will be working at the smooth grind still, but probably also at another coffee shop. the java train. why two coffee shops you ask. well the smooth grind got sold. this is the last week with the current owners. the manager got fired because the new owners are going to be like the manager was. and the new guy got fired. i am still working here. we don't know how much yet or anything. but the manager likes me so much that when she got a job managing at the java train she asked me to come work there too. so i should be working at both for a while. maybe after the new owners get used to the smooth grind i might go to just the java train. maybe the smooth grind will give me more hours and i will not work at the java train. don't know yet but coffee is what the summer holds for me.

well my brother paul is getting married this weekend. that should be pretty exciting i guess...
not much else i have to say about that.

a while ago my phone started getting lots of text messages. it was like they were wrong numbers but if i texted the people back they said they didn't text me. they texted someone else. their phone showed a different number. so after 50 wrong number texts the first day i stopped replying and just saved the funny ones. here are some of the best. (all typos were in the texts)

- hey sexy i had a great day. thanks so much, i love you! carla
(my roommates really wanted me to respond to this one)
- FWD: your love wil call tonite at 11:59 or kiss u tomorrow or ask u out but if you brek this chain you'll be cursed. send to 10 ppl.
       (no one called... dang)
- Just a reminder that tomorrow is "Hug a retard" day. so don't freak out like you did last year.Nobody's trying to hurt you.
- shutup id like to see you do this monkey dance
- hey i don't know who you are but for some reason i keep getting texts from you ~Dani J
(this was when i hadn't sent any texts for a few days)
- Today is SEXYFRIEND day and baby u know u sexy! Send this all ur sexy friends (even me) if u get 1-u ugly 2-ok 3-dang 4- wow 5-sexy!
(these next ones are a series that happened all from one number withing a few minutes of each other)
- you can choose to come out immediately or i will come in and get you in fron of your friends. you are so grounded along with thomas
- ps it is in your best interest no to say a word when you get in the car or home. i will let you both know what consequences you will get when im ready.
- and can keep my temper
- i am truly dissappointed in both of you show all this to thomas i am ging to bed
(thats the end of that series. weird that it mentioned me)
(here is another series... all of these texts came within a minute. my phone hadn't finished beeping from one when the next would come in)
- are you igging me again or what
- r u mad at me?
- r u upset with me?
- r u busy?
- r u working out with sweat glistening all over ur body?

- your phys ed teacher called uhave 11 absences and have to make up classes r u trying to notgraduate i am not happy u need to see her today and get on it
- r we doing manhunt 2nite?
- kelsey loves you.

there are those. there were so many more. those are just the ones i thought were funniest.

Train rides, Lions, Gambling, and Mirrors

the train ride was kind of interesting... not super interesting because i rode from 11:15-3:35 the first time so everyone else was asleep and it was dark out. nothing to do, no one to talk to, nothing to see. the way back it was 2:40-7:15 so it would have been light out for the last bit but i was sleeping the whole time.

sorry to those of you in fargo that i didn't see. which is everyone. i wish i could have seen people but i was at church for like 16 hours each day. the people i saw the most outside of church were my parents. i stayed at home and got rides to and from church from them. and i still saw them under a total of a few hours.

i got the chronicles of narnia books off ebay recently. it took a while to find the right ones. i wanted, nay, i needed to get a copy that had the old numbering. none of this crazy starting with "magicians nephew" crap. and that also meant i ended up getting the same kind i was read before bed as a child.

<SPOILER ALERT>
i read all of "prince caspian" on wednesday. and three quarters of "dawn treader" one of my new favorite quotes is from the ending of caspian.

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve," said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth."

and in caspian i really loved the part (i will not quote for it is longer) when eustace is a dragon and is trying to shed his dragon skin, but each time he does it is just dragon underneath. aslan says eustace must let him do it. aslan cuts deeper than eustace did, it hurts for his dragon skin to come off, but after it is off it is really off.
<END SPOILER ALERT>

good books.

i saw 21 last night. the first full price movie i have seen in at least 8 months. maybe about 11 depending how you count the cooper theater... let me tell you. there is kind of a difference between the quality of the dollar theater and the brand new dlp projection at the nice theater. wow. too bad it costs eight times as much....

Leaving on a midnight train to georgia...

ok not really but its catchier than "leaving on a eleven forty five train to north dakota"

thats right. i am riding the train home to help out with dinner theater at salem. i have no idea what riding the train will be like. never done it before. hopefully its interesting and i have something to put on here.

Snowing again?

well it is snowing again. sort of. it will be. they say.

this is the fourth time after the snow season was supposed over. normally i wouldn't know this but when snowing means not sleeping for a night and instead being outside the whole time by yourself shoveling.
ok part of the night is spent riding in the plow (driving between buildings or if i finish shoveling before he finishes plowing)

but anyway most of the night is spent by myself doing work that requires not much thought. so i end up having conversations with myself. but not really myself. i have conversations with people that aren't there, but are just in my head. most of the time i pretty much know what they will say, how the conversations will go. just normal everyday conversations, easy to imagine. other times i might get into a debate. not with myself, that would be crazy, but a debate with another person. they just happen to be in my head. when i am not sure how the person i am talking to would respond. so i have to have the debate multiple times. with different responses each time.
sometimes the next day (not really the next day because the true next day i usually end up working all day at the grind. so the two days really meld into one) i sometimes forget what conversations i had were real and if they were real what was the real one.

usually i end up figuring it out when i realize pretty much all of the conversations i have while shoveling are not real.

going out shoveling tonight. probably shoveling until i work saturday 7-4:30. (maybe a little break tomorrow to work lunch) yay. who knows what fun conversations will be had (maybe with you - well i mean, kind of you)

yeah basically shoveling makes you crazy.

not about the smooth grind

so most of my entrys of late have been about the smooth grind. mainly because i get bored while working so thats when i write. but today for a change of pace i am not going to talk about it.

ok except for this quick little story.

a girl (highschool aged) was ordering a sandwich "can i get a BLT" after a slight pause "but instead of the tomato..." right here i am thinking to myself who messes with a blt. there is not that much to mess with "... could i get turkey"
i wasn't expecting that. i said it was fine. in my head i thought best improvement possible to a blt. especially since turkey lets it stay a blt.

ok thats it

so at the beginning of this year i started journaling two pages a night. for some reason at the beginning of march i stopped. just for a little while at first then i would have gotten back into it but i was going to write about the days i missed first so it looked like i have never stopped. but that made me delay more. then more. then april started. well i recently decided i wasn't going to talk about the missing days but just write a summary of march as a whole. i summarized march in two pages. my normal day amount. i can't decided if this makes me boring or just an expert summarizer.

i thought about just scribbling giberish into most of the 30 days worth with a few real sentences in there and then with black magic marker blacking out the nonsense and stamping classified or top secret on there. - man that would make me look cool - but i didn't because no one else is reading my journal anyway. maybe they are. i should make a fake journal so they can't know my plans.

anyway. its so tough to let not doing something become a reason to keep not doing something. (e.g. - i didn't journal yesterday i must do that before i write todays) then one becomes two. how come doing one good thing does not make it easier to do another. instead doing something makes it easier to not (e.g. i worked out yesterday, i don't need to work out today) maybe its just we are creatures of excuses. whatever logic it takes for us we will find an excuse. this is me rambling. i am done.

preview for whenever i do mention the smooth grind - stories about "mrs. jesus is my BFF t-shirt" and "mr. cellphone"

have a good day?

so when i work i always say "have a good day" to people when i had them their drink or they finish paying (whichever is last) if they are taking it to go. but what do i say i say to those who are drinking it here? i need some help. "have a good day" is so much like a goodbye. i can't say it if they are staying.

i thought about (and even said) "i hope you like it" a few times., but thats a lie. i don't hope you like it. i made it. i know you'll like it.

and what to do with the fumblers. you know the people, get their coffee, get their change, i say "have a good day" and then they take 17 minutes to get their keys out of their purse, organize receipts in their wallet. if its busy  i can move on to helping whoever is next in line (even if its not busy, there only needs to be one more person) but when they are the only one getting help i feel obliged to stand there while they fumble. but do i have to? i already said my little goodbye. i normally find something near where i am standing to wipe up.

just put your crap in your pocket (or purse or whatever) and go. sit in your car and organize if its really that important to you.

thats my rants for today. i'm done. at least for now.

OCD? -smooth grind edition

well i have been working since 7 this morning. i have been realizing the past few days that it seems like i might have ocd based on my habits at work.

i like to wash dishes only when they are grouped by kind. i can't just put them in the sink and grab what may, i have to separate them out. you may think that's not to bad but we don't just have mugs and plates. we have 6 kinds of plates - floral design red (biggest), plain white, colored (red and yellow, i can wash the different colors as one group, but in the drying rack they have to be reds then yellows), white floral design, little white floral, and small plain white. - and 3 sizes of bowls - floral red (salad), white floral (bowl of soup), and plain white (cup of soup).

i can wash the mugs all together (in their own group, not intermixed with plates or what have you. but i do have to organize them on the shelf, no one else does at all but i do. it goes the two state mugs (alaska and hawaii), 3 off white mugs, grey mug, white curvy mug, white straight mug, kim's blue mug, charlie's buffalo bill mug, 5 green mugs, one dark green mug, (those were all the small sizes, now for the larges) 4 striped white mugs, 2 maroon mugs, 2 orange mugs, 4 tall skinny white mugs, 2 not quite as tall (but should be) white mugs.

they all have to be in order. when i come in i will organize them, they will stay that way until i am gone and then will get messed up by the next day, i can tell how busy it was by how messed up they are. if it wasn't bust most are in the right spot still.

i straighten chairs after people are done sitting in them, sometimes to fast. i have to hold myself back to at least let them out the doors before i fix their chairs. i don't think they like it when i straighten them when they are still standing there putting their coats on.

everything has to be super clean. sometimes when it has been super busy and things aren't as clean as i want i think ahh i need to clean this up before the owners come in. then the owners come in and say "wow its so clean, good job thomas."

mopping. normally when i sweep and mop its when i am there by myself, i was never told how to mop i just told them i knew how. one time my boss was there when i did mop they asked if i always mop like that. i said "yeah, why?" apparently most people never really move all the stuff and mop under it.

speaking of mopping. before i mop i always have to take out the trash and do the dishes. if you don't do the dishes first they drip on the floor when they dry. and if you don't take the trash out first. you leave wet foot prints on the floor when you come in, different than the dry foot prints you leave if you walk on the floor when its still wet and your shoes are dry. (oh by the way you can't do that either)

paper towels. i am pretty sure i use the most paper towels ever. we went through a box in a week and a half. a box is 30 rolls. thats alot.

and those are just some of the things. but its time to be done now. gotta go.
and those lists were done from memory, without looing at all.

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Alex Edwards!

well this weekend alex and toni got married. so amazing. it was the first of my real close friends to get married. i have had friends get married before but not like alex. i had the honor of being one of alex's groomsmen. the first wedding i have been it. that was really fun. everything (and everyone) was really beautiful. the whole weekend was really fun. the funnest weekend i have had in a long time.

anyway one of my favorite stories from this weekend.

in the little "how i know these people standing next to me" thing for the program alex wrote "thomas has the talent of coaxing any woman into making him cookies" so friday night at the groom's dinner the maid of honor (maggie) and two bridesmaids (alisha and abby) (all of whom i had only met once before 2 years ago) all told me that there was no way i was going to convince them to make me cookies. well by the end of the night i had one agreeing to give me a quiz on a story she told and for every question i got i would get a cookie. a good start.

saturday we had the quiz and i got fifty questions right. and convinced the other bridesmaid to make me a dozen. then came the wedding and the dance and all that jazz so most of the afternoon there was no tie to "coax" that night the parents had a sweet after party and i decided to use the straight forward approach to get maggie to make me some cookies. i told her "ok last night all three of you said you wouldn't make me cookies, the other two already are, it would make a way better story if i got all three of you to make me cookies." she said "but for me its a way better story if all three of us said we wouldn't make you cookies and the other to cracked and i didn't. i a going to stay strong i am never going to make you any cookies." at this point steve (he played guitar for the wedding) got up to get some of the left over oreo dessert stuff. i did some convincing/coaxing and right when steve sits back down maggie cracks and says "oh i could make you a giant heart shaped cookie in the sweet new heart shaped pan i got" steve is awestruck "what happened, i left two seconds ago and you were so strong, you were never giving in. i come back from getting oreo stuff and you are making him a giant heart shaped cookie. how does this work?!"

amazing in a little over 24 hours a complete 360 of three girls from never making me cookies to making me cookies. lots of them. the final tally was 1 giant heart shaped cookie from maggie, one (or did i get it up to two dozen) from alisha, and 60 from abby. there was also talk of brownies, cakes, and pot roast (all of this on top of cookies).

good times.

its times like this i wish i like coffee.

so i have been working for an hour and fourty minutes already this morning. started at 7. if there were time that i wish i liked coffee this would be it. working at 7, being tired, being in a coffee shop, surrounded by caffeine.... i just find it all disgusting. ok maybe disgusting is to strong but i don't like it. good thing we have mt dew here too...

my boss had surgery this week so she is gone so i am working a bunch more. plus we have a new girl who just started this week so i am training her in. if you would have told me a few months ago that i was going to be teaching someone how to make coffee things i probably wouldn't believe you. well i might but only because you wouldn't lie to me.

so i found a really funny thing this week. its called Garfield Minus Garfield
its super funny. someone takes garfield comics and takes garfield out of them. it just makes jon look like a crazy person. hilarious

check it out http://garfieldminusgarfield.tumblr.com/

the coffee shop has been super slow this week. the whole time i have been
writing this only one person has come in. they wanted a hot chocolate. i made
it for them. after they left i was cleaning the little pitcher thing we use to
steam stuff.... a huge chuck of chocolate fell out. never had that happen
before.... it was like half the chocolate powder i put in there. hopefully they
don't need their hot chocolate very chocolaty to enjoy it.

Kohl's is a magic store. whatever you need is always at least fifty percent
off. if you go to kohl's looking for a a dress shirt, dress shirts will be
fifty percent off. or more. if you go looking for pants, fifty percent off
pants. once i went with a friend who didn't believe kohls was magic and that
black ties and white dress shirts (what we were going for that day) would both
be fifty percent off. i assured him they would. he still didn't believe. sure
enough everything in the whole store was 50 percent off that day. last week i
needed to get a suit for my roommate's wedding tomorrow. went with another
roommate told him about the 50 percent magic. he was skeptical but didn't
completely disbelieve. i got my suit for fifty percent of (plus i think another
10 or 15 percent for some sale last weekend) and he, not even going looking for
these things, found slippers and a dress shirt he liked and sure enough both
were over fifty percent off. kohl's is a magic store.

well thats enough for today. i wish some people came in here for some coffee...
its super slow.

on this day (leap day) in 1504 christopher columbus
used a predicted lunar eclipse to scare natives on jamaica (where he was stranded or
something) to giving him food.

over time

well we'll see how long this entry gets, i am supposed to be done working at 4:30. its 4:35 right now. i am going to write this entry until its time to leave (aka whenever the owners get here) or until i am done. which ever happens first.

today was a busy day at the grind. 5 minutes ago was the first time since i got here at 9 in the morning that there is no one here but me. oddly the slowest time was 11:30-1 when sophie was here to help. there are always two people for the lunch shift.

other than that it was a good flow this morning and busy all afternoon. i almost ran out of mugs for a little bit. don't worry though i am really good and fast at washing dishes.

i am playing a lot of online scrabble now... i think 10 games right now finished 3 already. won all three. statistically my best word was jerries but i think my best word was codeine.

miss no whipped cream was just here. can you guess why i call her that. its because she alwyas gets a white chocolate mocha. every time she is in here, with no whipped cream. when she walks up to the counter i ask "white chocolate mocha?" and she says "no whipped cream" i think it should be implied that if i remember she is getting a white chocolate mocha that i remember its no whipped cream... come on no whipped cream lady.

so who knows good things i can make with lots of bread. i get free bread from work whenever the new bread comes in. the old stuff is still good. anything other than toast and sandwiches for me to make with it?

the last three times the owners were supposed to come and relieve me at 4:30 they came in at 4:45, 5:00. and 5:15. i wonder if they are going to wait until 5:30 today. just to keep the pattern going.

well i think thats all i've got for today. so i am going to end with the question i have been asking myself a lot lately...

are the noodles really done, or am i just sick of standing here making sure they don't boil over?

procrastinating...

it was a slow day at the smooth grind today. i would have made another post from work since you all seemed to like it. but i didn't know i would be working all afternoon until i was there so i didn't bring my laptop. i would have had plenty of time too. it was a slow day. so i played speed scrabble by myself.

i am really proud of myself for getting "mullet" in there.

again there was a group of people studying. (again it was 2 girls and a boy, but not the same ones) they were doing math and i was bored. i thought about studying with them. that might be odd though. what do you think? if you were in a coffee shop would you let the barista (yes thats the word for boys too) study with you?
maybe next time...

well thats all i've got for now. mainly i just wanted to brag about using mullet and postpone from cleaning the bathroom. don't get me wrong i am going to attack that thing. i just didn't want to start yet. if you need me in the next hour and a half thats where i'll be. listening to adventures in odyssey and cleaning like crazy.

update: an hour and a half, three adventures in odyssey, lots of fumes and paper towels later and that bathroom is super clean.

Working this afternoon at the Smooth Grind

so i am working right now... coffee shops (at least this one) are pretty fun places to work. i can listen to the different people sitting and talking.

one group this morning was from a church and they were having a meeting about 2 missionaries they were supporting that go out and live with homeless people and witness to them and if they we be about to give enough support for the two people two and another two people to their team. i thought what do they need support for. they are being homeless...

another group one table away from them was talking about surrogate mothers and things.... i tried not to listen to that conversation. yuck.

the skate ladies are in now. they are regulars. nice old ladies who skate next door everyday and then come in for lunch together.

there is a table of three students from northwestern. i recognize them all but we don't know each other. one of the girls asked the boy how to spell traitor. he told he how to spell it, but none of them know he is wrong.

i just had to take a break from writing this to help what i assume to be a grandfather, mother, and baby girl. the lady and man were fighting over who was going to pay. both asking me to take their money. i went with the father because he had his out first. it reminded me of when my dad and grandpa fight over who gets the check. once my grandpa offered the waitress a hundred dollar tip if he got the bill, before we had even ordered. to bad these people didn't do that.

ok i might want to revise my grandfather, mother, baby theory... they are looking at a paper and he is giving corrections and things. he brought in the baby and i think she got the bottle out so who knows.

well thats what's happening in the land of the Smooth Grind.

Well its 2008.

i haven't accidentally written 2007 on anything yet. i hope the new year is treating you all well.

i was at barnes and noble today. i wish i could just wander around a bookstore and get any book that looked interesting. if i won the powerball i would definately bring a shopping cart to a bookstore and just go around getting books. it would be sweet

today i got Basic History of the United States by Charles and Mary Beard. it looks to be an interesting read, plus the book just looks sweet.

inside the book's cover is this

i also got The Faith of the American Soldier by... i can't remember but its the guy who wrote The Faith of George W. Bush.

the best part is that they were both only a dollar each. how can you get better than that? well i suppose fifty cents would be better. or free. maybe if they paid me to take them....

man these books sure make me look like a nerd. man... i am a nerd. oh well.
